Masaba’s house turns 12 today: Here’s how the iconoclastic designer broke the traditional mold of Indian fashion

Popular designer Masaba Gupta’s fashion brand ‘House of Masaba’ completed twelve years today. She is the soul and essence of House of Masaba, who has run the business since the age of 19. Now in its twelfth year, Masaba’s fashion label, best defined as the Diffusion Line label, has made its presence felt in the Indian fashion scene. The brand may be a little over a decade old, but it shows no signs of stagnation, much like the brains behind the label.

Starting at the young age of 19, with spontaneous creativity but without a business strategy, Masaba has been persistent in pursuing her passion. She continues to innovate, innovate and create. She feels it’s important that she reinvent herself after every season, which she is known for.

“I wish I had 12 lessons to share about building a brand but I don’t. But I have one. Be disciplined about what you do and how you do it,” she told 12 Years of Her Brand said in an Instagram post celebrating the completion.

She has done Diploma in Apparel Manufacturing and Design from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. She previously said in an interview with Your Story that she felt the imperative to balance creativity, functionality and commercial viability to build a collection and drive a brand. Masaba said she knows there is an emptiness in the market for easy and casual clothing that is neither luxurious nor flashy, but somewhere in between, like a ‘anytime-anywhere brand’.

She feels that the people in her organization should match in each other’s wavelengths. “It is essential that people are a cultural mix. They should know and mingle with the voice of the brand. We look for people who can express and push their boundaries; their voices match the brand ethos. Must match, even if they are trying to find it, ”she said in an interview.

She has spoken about the need for inclusivity in fashion by talking about photoshopped magazine shots and body malformations. Being himself a victim of body shaming, he voiced the views of many young girls when they started with the idea, ‘different is beautiful’. It is this compassion that defines ‘Masaba’s house’. From embracing her cultural heritage and identity, starting a venture without a proper business title to securing a spot in Forbes ’30 Under 30′, there’s not much this fashion entrepreneur hasn’t done before.
