The industry veteran said that with the increase in prices, sales of small cars, especially in non-metro markets across the country, have been affected. He cautioned that the implementation of the six airbag regulation will push up prices further, which will further shrink the domestic small car industry.
“So, the fear is that it will shrink the (six airbags) market. The car manufacturing sector is important because it is a huge creator of jobs. When cars are sold in the market it creates many jobs – driver, maintenance, repair , stuff etc,” Bhargava said.
He added: “If the car market doesn’t grow the way it has in the last three years, it will have an adverse effect on job creation and economic growth.” When asked how much the price of cars could go up due to airbags, Bhargava said: “I am not sure but it could be in the range of Rs 20,000-25,000, which is a lot of money for a small car buyer. “
He said that there were not many countries around the world which have implemented such regulation. Bhargava said, “I think, we will be among the first countries to do so… So the industry feels that this is not the right time to bring six airbag rules. We want the government to reconsider the matter.” “

According to the government, the airbags will ensure the safety of passengers across all segments, irrespective of the price/variant of the vehicle. According to the latest government data, a total of 1,16,496 road accidents occurred on National Highways (NHs) including expressways in 2020, resulting in 47,984 deaths.
Acknowledging that airbags help save lives in case of road accidents, Bhargava said cost escalation due to regulation, however, will prevent many driving two-wheelers from upgrading to entry-level cars.
“Driving a two-wheeler is more unsafe than driving a car on any given day. Hence, the overall deaths due to car accidents may come down..While the probability of death in a two-wheeler may increase. All in all, it is a matter of consideration,” he said.
The matter needs to be looked at in totality, Bhargava said. He said that when costs go up, the impact on smaller cars is greater than for larger cars. “So, that’s what happened and now, we will get this additional cost of extra airbags again, so the industry has expressed a view that the market for small cars will get smaller,” Bhargava said.
He said that with the impact on the affordability factor, the offtake of small cars is decreasing in smaller cities, towns and rural areas, while the market for expensive cars in urban centers is expanding across the country.
