Death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi: Martyr’s Day or Martyr’s Day is celebrated on 30 January. This day marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On this day in 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse after his regular multi-faith prayer meeting in the premises of Birla House. Godse, a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, blamed Gandhi for favoring the Muslim community during the partition of India in 1947. He shot Gandhi thrice in the chest and abdomen. It is said that Gandhi uttered the last words “Hey Ram”.

“Do I have that non-violence of the heroes? Only my death will show it. If someone killed me and I died with a prayer for the killer on my lips, and the memory of God and the consciousness of His living presence in the sanctuary of my heart , then alone I shall be called the non-violence of the brave,” Gandhi said a few days before his assassination.

A lawyer, politician, leader, social reformer and nationalist, Gandhi is one of the prominent figures of the Indian independence movement. “Satya” or Truth and “Ahimsa” or non-violence were his two most important guiding principles and also his weapons which he used against the British Empire to secure India’s independence.

He was also an advocate of minority rights and devoted his life to building and strengthening communal harmony especially between Hindu and Muslim communities. For his unparalleled contribution, he is regarded as the Father of the Nation. He is also fondly remembered as Bapu.
