Marcelo leaving Real Madrid after fifth UEFA Champions League title

By winning another Champions League trophy, Marcelo ended his era at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian legend said he would not continue playing for the club after the team’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday.

“It was my last match with Real Madrid,” said Marcelo, 34. “I’m not sad. I couldn’t be happier after leaving the club. I’m so grateful. It’s the end of a very beautiful cycle.”

It was an emotional farewell for Marcelo as Madrid celebrated the title with their fans on Sunday. He received a huge cheer from the supporters and his teammates threw him in the air several times.

Marcelo cried when he addressed the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium but said there was no reason to be sad.

He said, ‘I am very happy. “I’m saying goodbye after winning another Champions League title.”

Marcelo is leaving Brazilian club Fluminense in 2006, 16 years after taking over from Brazilian great Roberto Carlos.

Marcelo said he plans to play a few more years before retiring, but gave no indication of where. He said that coaching is not in his plans for the future.

“I don’t think coaching is for me. I think I’m bad at it, I’m not good with strategy. I don’t know how it works,” Marcelo said with a smile.

He later said that he wanted to join Real Madrid somehow. His son, Enzo, plays for the club’s youth teams.

Marcelo won his 24th trophy with the club last month, when Madrid won the Spanish league for a record 35th time. He won his 23rd title at the Spanish Super Cup in January, tying the great Francisco “Paco” Gento, whose heyday was in the 1950s and ’60s.

Karim Benzema defeated former defender Sergio Ramos to win his 22nd title with Madrid on Saturday. Benzema and Marcelo are among several Madrid players who tied former club player Cristiano Ronaldo with five Champions League trophies. Gento has six European titles.

In his honor collection, Marcelo has six Spanish league trophies, four club World Cup, three UEFA Super Cups, two Copa del Rey and five Spanish Super Cups. He has also won one Confederations Cup and two Olympic medals with Brazil.

Marcelo lost his spot as a starter this season and did not play often under coach Carlo Ancelotti. He didn’t get a chance to play in Saturday’s final.

Other players leaving Madrid this season include Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio and Francisco Isco. Luka Modric is ready to renew his contract.

Marcelo’s former Brazil teammate, Dani Alves, holds the most career titles with 41, most of them with Barcelona.
