Canada Day Saskatoon hosted a 2022 celebration with face painting, activities and concerts.

“We have some history and experience with this type of event, and we also do a lot of community events here. So they asked if we would go ahead and we were very happy to do it,” said Shaad Ali, director, Canada D. Saskatoon said.

This year’s host says it was a challenge to put it together, but she liked how it turned out.

“Right now I’m celebrating with my kids, and if they’re having fun, I’m having fun,” said Saskatoon resident Jadis Wolfe.

Vanushkevin’s Bannock Man shares indigenous food, offering free bannock with strawberry jam on top.

“There were a lot of opportunities before for people to try it. If they liked it they could come to VanSkevin and eat all kinds of bannock. We smoke maple and we have a flight of different types of jams ,” said Doug Hinford, chef.

The day was spent celebrating ‘the honor of our nation’, which included a display of all the different cultures within Saskatoon.

There were Chinese dancers, Scottish country dancers, Irish dancers, an Afghan choir, Ukrainian dancers, indigenous dancers and storytellers.

“We presented this as a gratifying honor to Canada. It’s not necessarily all about celebration, it’s about education and information,” Ali said.

On Friday nights at 10:30 people can walk the Broadway Bridge and watch the fireworks.

“By the time we get to the fireworks at 10:30 tonight, she will be there completely. I am totally expecting 20,25,000 people,” Ali said.
