A man from Maharashtra’s Thane city lost nearly Rs 5 lakh in a cyber fraud after he relied on Google search results to seek a refund for his canceled trip to the African country, an official said on Wednesday.

In his police complaint, the man said he had booked a return ticket to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, as he and his friend wanted to go to Mombasa city. The tickets were booked for April 29 and May 05 and he paid Rs 1.46 lakh for them.

However, the complainant changed plans and decided to cancel the ticket and seek refund, the official said. He filled a form for refund on the airline’s website on April 11.

The official said that when the complainant could not reach the helpline of the airline, he did a Google search and got the contact number of the airline. The official said he dialed the number and was told that the technical team of the airline would get in touch with him and facilitate the refund.

Thereafter a person spoke to the complainant and said that he was eligible to get Rs 1.28 lakh back. The officer said that he asked the complainant to download an app, gained full access to her phone and stole Rs 4.8 lakh from her accounts.

Based on the person’s complaint, the Chitalsar police registered a case under the IT Act on Tuesday. An investigation is on, the official said, adding that no arrests have been made so far.
