Ahead of the 100th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Institute for Competitiveness (IFC) in partnership with Axis My India and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has released a detailed report on the impact of the monthly radio show. in October 2014.

An analysis highlighted how each episode has inspired people to work for the betterment of the society. The report pointed out that the conversational, personal tone and insightful topics make radio shows more relatable, relevant and accessible to listeners. Additionally, it found five major themes – sanitation and hygiene, health, wellness, water conservation and sustainable development.

All of these topics have contributed to new movements or initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Ayushman Bharat, Covid-19 vaccination, eSanjeevani, Fit India Movement, Jalshakti Abhiyan, Atal Bhujal Yojana, Namami Gange, Digital India and women empowerment.

Mann Ki Baat was launched with the aim of connecting people and sending messages, connecting citizens, catalysing collective action, focusing on cultural commitment and celebrating changemakers.

This report was shared on Thursday by Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi; MyGov CEO Akash Tripathi; and Dr. Amit Kapoor, President of IFC in the presence of Dr. Mark Esposito, Hult International Business School and professor at Harvard University; Hari Menon, Country Director at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and Dr. Michael Green, CEO of the Social Progress Imperative.

The detailed report is the result of an in-depth examination of transcripts of 99 episodes of radio shows published between 2014 and 2023, using a machine learning technique called natural language processing. The research team used two specialized tools called WordStat and Atlas.ti to analyze the text of the cases.

Many of those who have listened to ‘Mann Ki Baat’ have participated in transformative initiatives in their communities with the aim of making a lasting and lasting impact. These people also feel connected as the program celebrates grassroots changemakers and their work. It also emphasizes on the role of Startups and MSMEs in achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat, while encouraging people of all ages to take action to promote social, as well as environmental causes.

According to the report, through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ citizens were also encouraged to spread the word about government policies, programs and initiatives focused on economic, social and sustainable development. This catalysed collective action towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, to which Dr Kapoor said India would achieve these goals at least 140 years earlier than the rest of the world.

Dr Kapoor said, “The world can learn from such initiatives and world leaders should see this as an example of the art of communicating with the public.”

It is currently being broadcast by more than 500 broadcasting stations of All India Radio and is also available on YouTube and the Prime Minister’s own communication app. During the programme, Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi said that ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has increased radio listening among citizens, and many people come back to radio only because of it.

“The number of people tuning in to digital and visual mediums is bigger than the number of people listening to it on radio. It is a personal choice. But more than 23 crore Indians religiously tune in to each episode, while more than 100 crore people Connected to Mann Ki Baat at least once,” Dwivedi said.
