Manipur Violence: More than 5,800 people have fled to Mizoram from violence-hit Manipur following recent inter-caste clashes in the northeastern state. There was a violent clash between the Meitei and the tribals, in which 71 people have died so far.

According to officials, at least 5,822 people from the Chin-Kuki-Mizo community are living in temporary relief camps in six districts of Mizoram. Officials said Aizawl district currently has the highest number of such oustees in 2021, followed by Kolasib (1,847) and Saitual (1,790).

Mizoram Lok Sabha member C Lalrosanga has supported the demand for a separate administration for tribal people made by the tribal legislators of Manipur. In the wake of the violent clashes, 10 Kuki MLAs, including seven from the BJP, urged the Center to form a separate administration, claiming that the tribal people could no longer live under the Manipur government.

Unrest in Manipur erupted on 3 May following a protest march organized by the Kuki tribes, which clashed with the non-tribal Meitei community. The march was called to protest against the recent Manipur High Court order, which recommended the state government to the Center for seeking inclusion of the majority and predominantly Hindu Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. was asked to send.

The violence was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserved forest land, which led to several smaller agitations. Meites constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. The tribals – Naga and Kuki – constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.

Manipur CM meets Amit Shah

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh along with his four cabinet ministers and BJP state president Sharda Devi met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital on Sunday (May 14).

Earlier, Singh informed that a high-level inquiry would be conducted to hold those responsible for the violence accountable and action would also be taken against those who failed to discharge their responsibilities in preventing the unrest. “A high-level inquiry will be conducted to fix responsibility on the individuals/groups behind the violence and the government servants who failed to discharge their responsibilities. I appeal to all not to spread or believe baseless and baseless rumours. Total 35,655 persons, including 1,593 students, have been evacuated to safer places so far.”
