Manipur Landslide News UpdatesThe death toll in a landslide at a railway construction site in Manipur’s Noni district on Saturday (July 2) rose to 24, with 38 people still missing, officials said. He said more teams have been deployed at the site of Tupul to augment the search and rescue operation.

A defense spokesperson in Guwahati said that the Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, SDRF and NDRF are continuing the search operations at the site.

“Through WAL radar is being used successfully, and a search and rescue dog is being employed to assist,” he said. So far 13 Territorial Army personnel and five civilians have been safely rescued. He said bodies of 18 Territorial Army personnel and six civilians were recovered.

“The search is on for 12 missing Territorial Army personnel and 26 civilians,” he said.

The spokesman said the bodies of 14 personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were sent to their hometowns by two Indian Air Force aircraft and an Army helicopter.

The body of a jawan was sent by road to Kangpokpi district of Manipur. The spokesman said full military honors were given to the deceased personnel in Imphal before the bodies were sent to their destination.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday termed the landslide in Noni district as the “worst incident in the history of the state”. Chief Minister Singh again visited the spot to encourage the personnel engaged in the rescue operations.

“This is the worst incident in the history of the state. It will take 2-3 days to recover all the bodies because of the mud,” Singh said.

“The Center has also sent NDRF and Army personnel for the rescue operation. Due to moisture in the soil, vehicular movement is being affected which is causing delay. The rescue operation will take 2-3 days more,” he said.

When did this incident happen?

A landslide occurred on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday near the company site of the Indian Army’s 107 Territorial Army deployed near Tupul railway station to protect the under-construction railway line from Jiribam to Imphal.

North-East Frontier Railway CPRO said that the landslide caused by incessant rains has damaged the Tupul station building of Jiribam-Imphal new line project.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday reviewed the landslide situation in Manipur due to incessant rains and assured full possible support from the central government.

“Spoke to Manipur CM N Biren Singh and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible assistance from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all the affected. My condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured be cured at the earliest,” PM Modi said in a Twitter post.
