Manipur elections: Congress ties up with five Left parties to defeat BJP

Manipur Congress and five Left parties, CPI, CPI(M), RSP, JD(S) and Forward Bloc on Thursday announced a pre-poll alliance with a common objective of defeating the BJP in the upcoming 12th Manipur Assembly elections. , The announcement was made during a press conference held in the presence of leaders of six political parties at Imphal West, the headquarters of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.

According to him, the alliance would be given a name within a day or two and a common minimum policy would be formulated in the interest of the public.

Recently Congress released its first list of 40 candidates and CPI also named two candidates in its first list for 60 assembly seats in Manipur. However, the remaining four Left parties had not announced any candidate till date.

With regard to the overlapping of Congress candidate (Ksheriyam Kennedy Singh) and CPI candidate (Yengkhom Roma Devi) in Kakching assembly constituency, CPI state secretary L Sotinkumar said, both the candidates will contest in a ‘friendly manner’.

He said the alliance for the CPI candidate (RK Amusana) of Khurai assembly constituency has decided to jointly support his lone candidate. He said the alliance had also agreed to collectively support the remaining 39 candidates of the Congress to ensure that they win the elections.

Speaking to the media, former Chief Minister O Ibobi welcomed the move and said that six secular parties with like-minded had joined hands to give a complete stop to the BJP-led government and its ‘dictatorial rule’.

Ibobi, who is also a CLP leader, said, “If the BJP-led government continues, democracy from the state will be in danger and Manipur will only move backwards in every respect.”

He alleged that the BJP-led government’s strategy of delaying the conduct of local body elections in Manipur was a clear example of their dictatorial rule. “Why can’t the state government conduct elections to local bodies when other states can conduct it during the pandemic?” he questioned.

Seeking public’s support and blessings to strengthen the alliance, Ibobi said, “With the defeat of the BJP by the alliance, Manipur will soon open a new era or chapter of development by forming a coalition government, which will serve the common interest.” . public.”

Asked about the alliance’s plans to announce a new candidate, Ibobi said, “I’ll let you know very soon if there is one.”
