Manipur: 4 die, several injured in fresh violence in Bishnupur area

At least four people, including a policeman and a teenage boy, were killed and several others injured in fresh separate incidents in the border areas between Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churanchanpur districts in the past 24 hours.

According to sources, a policeman was killed in an encounter with suspected terrorists last evening, while three others died on Saturday morning.

Sources said Bishnupur district has been the most sensitive area since the start of caste violence as it has proximity to both Maiti and Kuki communities.

Manipur is burning for the last 2 months and all efforts to maintain peace are not yielding results.

Violence broke out in the first week of May when members of the Kuki community protested against the issuance of Scheduled Caste status to the majority Meitei community. This protest turned into an ethnic war between the two communities.
