Mani Shankar Aiyar, Jairam Ramesh, Salman Khurshid…: Congress continues its poll time foot-in-mouth ‘ritual’

Salman Khurshid Book Controversy: It all started with Congress President Sonia Gandhi calling Narendra Modi a ‘maut ka saudagar’ (merchant of death) during the 2007 Gujarat Assembly election campaign. Congress leaders showed little interest in learning for past mistakes, issuing controversial remarks offering heavy ammunition to target the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Salman Khurshid is the latest to join the list of veteran Congress leaders who have courted a major controversy with their statements months before the crucial elections.

The BJP, in the past, has been using such remarks by Congress functionaries to launch an all-out attack on the oldest party during election campaigns. The saffron party will believe that the Salman Khurshid controversy has come at the right time, just ahead of the assembly elections in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh and others.

Mani Shankar Aiyar’s ‘chaiwala’, ‘neech insan’ remarks

Senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyar was suspended by Congress under immense pressure from all corners for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘neech insaan’ during the 2017 Gujarat election campaign. The BJP took advantage of his remarks to script a smooth victory in the assembly elections. Iyer’s suspension was revoked months later.

Aiyar’s infamous ‘chaiwala’ statement against Modi is believed to have helped the BJP win a major victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

After the surgical strike, Congress President Rahul Gandhi himself also called PM Modi a ‘broker of blood’.

When Rahul Gandhi called PM Modi ‘khoon ka dalal’

Criticizing PM Modi for playing politics over the 2016 cross-LoC surgical strike, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had used words like ‘khoon ka dalal’ for him.

Jairam Ramesh’s statement of ‘temple more than toilet’

In 2012, the then Union Minister Jairam Ramesh’s statement ‘there are more temples in the country than toilets’ had sparked massive protests by several right-wing organizations including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal.

PM Modi rebukes Sam Pitroda’s ‘hua to hua’ statement

In May 2019, the Congress was red-faced after party leader Sam Pitroda’s ‘hua to hua’ remark on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Congress then distanced itself from Pitroda’s statement, with PM Modi slamming the party saying it shows the party’s “character and arrogance”.

Pitroda, who was then the Overseas Congress chief, later apologized for his statement, but blamed his “poor Hindi” for it.

Pitroda had said, “The statement I made was completely distorted, because my Hindi is not good, I meant ‘jo hua wo bad hua’, I was thinking ‘bura’ in my mind. Couldn’t translate.

Salman Khurshid – the latest to join the infamous list of Congress

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Wednesday (November 10) released his book ‘Sunrise Over Ayodhya: Nationhood in Our Times’. Khurshid in his book likens Hindutva to hardline jihadi groups like ISIS and Boko Haram, which have now drawn sharp criticism from the BJP and Shiv Sena.

On page number 113 of the book, it is stated that “Sanatan Dharma and the classical Hinduism known to saints and saints were being pushed aside by a stronger version of Hindutva, by all standards the jihadists of groups like ISIS.” A political version similar to Islam. And the Boko Haram of recent years.”

The controversy over Khurshid’s book comes a few months before the UP assembly elections and is sure to be exposed during the BJP election campaign which is set to become more polarizing in the days to come.
