MANGALURU: A large portion of the right chest with part of the lung, and recurrent chest wall tumours, reconstructed on a 33-year-old patient with congenital disability, Maffucci syndrome, and recurrent chest wall tumours, at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital.
Doctor Jalaluddin AkbarThe head of the surgical oncology department said the Kerala woman was suffering from a disability, which had led to spinal deformities and bone tumors and vascular lesions.
“The patient had six surgeries in Coimbatore, and was diagnosed with cancer in June 2019, for which two surgeries were performed. He was treated for cancer in various hospitals in Kerala. Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. When the tumor recurred, hospitals were unprepared for further treatment. The hospitals sent him back, as it required a hugely challenging surgery, which had to remove and reconstruct the right half of the chest along with part of the right lung, which could lead to the death of the patient,” Dr. Akbar said.
Regarding the surgery, he said, “We looked for information about previous studies that could be followed to treat women.” However, we did not find any cases. So, the tumor board of our hospital had a discussion and decided to remove the tumor and part of the right lung. Taking up the case was not an easy decision, as the cancer involved part of the right chest and lung, and had previously been treated with surgery and radiation. After a thorough evaluation, she was asked to completely remove the tumor, which weighed about 2.5 kg, along with nine ribs and part of the right lung, about 15%, and later reconstruction of the chest wall, as in double mesh and titanium plates. Replacing the ribs on August 31st. The surgery lasted over 13 hours. He is now able to do daily routine activities and is being discharged,” he said.
