MANGALURU: While it is customary to make in-flight announcements in Kannada, Hindi or English, of late, the local language of Kannada, Tulu, has been used for the same. The use of the local languages ​​has made passengers happy.
Mangaluru-based pilot Pradeep Padmashali, a first officer with IndiGo, made a 26 second announcement in his mother tongue Tulu, on December 24, 2020. The flight was from Mumbai to Mangaluru, Speaking in Tulu, he started with “Nikleg maaterglaa solmelu!” (greetings to all). Pradeep welcomed the passengers on board, and wished them a smooth journey, that will last for about an hour and five minutes. The video of the announcement had gone viral on social media.
Similar announcements in Tulu have been made on flights in the last few days. A week ago, another video clipping of a flight’s first officer, making an inflight announcement in Tulu, went viral. It was lauded by many for popularizing Tulu. It was followed by another announcement done in Tulu, by the airline staff at the boarding gate, during Mumbai-Mangaluru IndiGo flight 6E5317, on Sunday.
“Some pilots have made announcements in Tulu recently. It’s really a nice development. I am sure that passengers feel proud when they hear the announcement in their mother tongue,” said Captain Michael Saldanhaa pilot with Air India Express, who hails from Valencia in Mangaluru. “The response for using a vernacular language during in-flight announcements is positive from passengers,” added an airhostess with a low-cost airline.
Mahesh Mulki,an engineer by profession, and Tulu language activist by passion, appreciated airlines and their crews promoting Tulu in their flights. While govt itself neglects Tulu, there is a consistent effort by IndiGo to use Tulu in announcements wherever possible. You won Tuluvas hearts, and we are humbled by your great gesture.”
