Mangaluru: Southern Railway (SR, Palakkad Division) plans to complete the work of two more platforms Mangaluru Central railway station till september
SR General Manager John Thomas said work had already begun on two additional platforms at the station. The pit line development work will be completed by March and the new platforms will be ready by September. The additional platform will help the railways to run more trains to Mangaluru Central Railway Station considering the demands of the people of the area,” he told reporters after conducting the annual inspection on Tuesday.
West Karavali Railway Passengers Augmentation Committee members submitted a memorandum urging SR Palakkad Mandal to expedite work on additional platforms. He also demanded the construction of a second entrance for the railway station from Attavar’s side. GM said a second arrival hall with additional platforms would also be developed.
In a memorandum, the committee had urged SR to operate the Vijayapura-Mangaluru Junction special express train from Mangaluru Central (using Bay Line platform) instead of operating it from Mangaluru Junction railway station. He also urged the Railways to run Yesvantpur-Mangaluru Junction Day Express.Gomateshwar ExpressTo extend the Mangaluru-Puttur Passenger train up to Mangaluru Central Railway Station and up to Subrahmanya Road with revised timings.
Activist GK Bhat said that CSMT Mumbai Express should be extended up to Mangaluru Central Railway Station and stoppage should be provided for Matsyagandha Express at Mangaluru Junction. He said the tri-weekly Bengaluru-Mangaluru Central Express via Mysore should be made a daily train.
The GM said the demands for extension of train services up to Mangaluru Central Railway Station will be considered as two more platforms are being built.
The GM said the Cheravathur-Mangaluru passenger train, which helps thousands of students from Kerala study in Mangaluru, will be resumed soon. “We had suspended the train service after the pandemic. Services of many passenger trains are yet to resume as Kerala is recording more than 45% of the Covid-19 cases in the country. After reviewing the threat of COVID-19 situation, especially the Omicron variant, the Railways will soon resume passenger service trains,” he said.
