Manchester United’s Scott McTominay responds to flak after derby loss

Defending champions Manchester City beat cross-town rivals Manchester United 4-1 in a high-octane Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday night.

Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring but Jadon Sancho equalized for Manchester United. Six minutes later, De Bruyne scored City’s second goal of the match. The second half didn’t feel like a derby fixture at all. United lacked teeth and Pep Guardiola’s side Riyad Mahrez scored twice to get all three points.

The biggest highlight of the Derby was the lack of fighting among Ralph Rangnick’s men. Former United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane were stunned by the result. The duo did not say anything while assessing the Red Devils’ second half performance on Sky Sports. Neville called United’s players “spiritless”, while Keane reprimanded them for “throwing in the towel”.

Now, United midfielder Scott McTominay has responded to the criticism. McTominay stressed that it was incredibly disappointing to hear those claims, but gave up. The 25-year-old is disappointed that people are questioning the effort level of the team.

“From my point of view, on the pitch, it’s hard to see what’s happening around you, but if people are saying that then so be it,” McTominay explained on Sky Sports.

He recognized that pundits have a right to have their own opinion, but it is incredibly disappointing if people think so. “I have to look back at it and look at body language and things like that, but for me, it hurts. If you give a team like that in the second half all the time in the world, you’re going to be punished. Simple,” the midfielder told Star Sports.

The loss now sees the Old Trafford organization fifth in the table, losing to fourth-placed Arsenal, who beat Watford 3–2 to move up the ladder.
