Manchester United close to hiring Ralph Rangnick as interim boss: report

Ralph Rangnick is close to finalizing a deal to become Manchester United’s interim manager as they seek a replacement for the sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it was widely reported on Thursday.

Premier League giants have identified the 63-year-old German, currently head of sport and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow, as a possible short-term successor to the Norwegian.

Michael Carrick led the side to Tuesday’s Champions League victory at Villarreal, having progressed to the knockout stages but the club are looking to bring in a more experienced figure by the end of the season.

United are planning to make a permanent appointment at the end of the campaign, with Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino firmly attached to the job.

The Athletic reported that Rangnik, the former manager of RB Leipzig, had reached a settlement with United, adding that the agreement was subject to Lokomotiv agreeing to release him from his contract.

But it said he would not be in charge in time for games at Chelsea this weekend due to work permit issues.

Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday after his side’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Watford.

They are eighth in the Premier League after losing four of their last five matches, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea and six points behind fourth-placed West Ham.
