Man recorded area 7 times before infiltrating Mamta residence: Police

A senior Kolkata Police official said on Monday that the man, who was arrested for infiltrating West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence here last week, searched the area at least seven times. Investigation revealed that during those visits, the accused allegedly clicked pictures of his residence using his mobile phone and lured local children with toffees to get information about the house in Kalighat area, in this case The officer, part of the SIT set up to investigate the matter, said.

In the intervening night of July 2-3, Hafizul Mulla broke into the security arrangements and entered Banerjee’s residence with an iron rod. He stayed there till being searched by security guards in the morning. “This man has been visiting the area for quite some time. He has been there at least seven times. Whenever he used to go there, he used to give toffees to the children and tried to get information from them regarding the CM residence. We have got several pictures of the Chief Minister’s house on his mobile phone. The investigation also revealed that Mulla was using at least 11 SIM cards and made calls to numbers located in Bangladesh as well as Jharkhand and Bihar. However, the nature of the interaction is yet to be ascertained, he said.

He had crossed the Bangladesh border during Durga Puja last year and stayed there for a few days. He is being questioned to know about his activities in the neighboring country. Responding to a question, the police officer said, there are indications that Mollah may have links with a terrorist organization. But nothing has been installed yet.

Meanwhile, a city court on Monday extended Mulla’s police custody till July 18. The infiltration created panic over security and questions were raised as to how he got past the Z-plus security cover provided to the chief minister. Following the incident, officials stepped up security in and around the CM residence and removed Director (Security) Vivek Sahay from his post.
