The accused, who worked in his uncle’s shop, was traced to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai through technical analysis by special teams

A 22-year-old man was arrested a day earlier from Navi Mumbai for allegedly vandalizing 18 crosses at a cemetery attached to the famous Mahim Church in Mumbai, police said.

A police officer said the motive behind the act is being probed.

After allegedly damaging the cross at the graveyard of St Michael’s Church in suburban Mahim on Saturday morning, the accused sat in the church for some time.

The accused, who worked in his uncle’s shop, was traced to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai through technical analysis by special teams. His picture also went viral on social media.

The police officer said, “Some things have come to the fore during the investigation, which cannot be shared as the matter is related to a religious place.”

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153-A (promoting enmity between two groups), 295 (injuring or desecrating places of worship), and criminal trespass. Further investigation is underway.
