Balu was booked under sections 11 (a) (treating animals cruelly – if any person beats, kicks, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures or otherwise treats any animal so as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering or causes or, being the owner permits, any animals to be so treated) (l) (mutilates any animal or kills any animal (including stray dogs) by using the method of strychnine injections in the heart or in any other unnecessarily cruel manner) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
A video of a man dragging an injured stray dog on a road and a woman holding a log in her left hand went viral on social media on Friday evening. The act was recorded in a CCTV camera fixed in a house.
After seeing the video, Mini Vasudevan, managing trustee of Humane Animal Society, Coimbatore, lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police on Friday evening. Based on her complaint, police sub-inspector V Sathishkumar registered an FIR against Balu and his mother, Selvi, 65.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Balu’s parents Vellingiri and Selvi were rearing cattle at their residence. The stray dog often entered their premises and disturbed the cattle. So, they told their son Balu, who visited them on Thursday, about the stray dog menace. He assaulted the stray dog with a log, and it suffered severe head injuries.
Mini said the head of the stray dog was found swollen. “The dog suffered severe injuries on its head. It lost vision on the right eye. The left eye of the dog was partially damaged. We are keeping the community dog in our shelter,” she said. She added that people who treated the community dog with cruelty should be punished severely.
