The accused, posing as police officers in front of the hired taxi driver, were forcibly taking the victim along with them to Jammu and Kashmir.

Two people have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping their 40-year-old business partner from Kashmere Gate in Phagwara, Punjab, police said on Saturday.

Police said they have been identified as Nishar Ahmed (48) and Imtiyaz Ahmed (48), both residents of Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district.

The police received a PCR call on Thursday where a person said that his brother-in-law Syed Tarikh was abducted by some Kashmiri people from near Kashmiri Gate. A senior police officer said the caller was contacted who said he was speaking from Kashmir.

Local inquiries were made with passersby and vendors in the vicinity and all tour and travel offices were visited.

During interrogation, it was revealed that two Kashmiri men kidnapped another Kashmiri from Hare Rama Travels, Kashmiri Gate. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said the CCTV footage located near Hare Rama Travels was analyzed and it was revealed that the accused forcibly took another Kashmiri into the taxi.

During investigation, the CCTV footage was examined and it was found that the said vehicle was heading towards Kashmir via GT Karnal Road. Police said they were immediately followed up and the SSPs in Haryana and Punjab were immediately informed.

The kidnappers were later caught in Phagwara city with the help of the Punjab Police. The DCP said that the victim was rescued and both his accomplices were arrested.

Police said that during interrogation it was revealed that both the parties were business partners and there was a dispute between the victim and the accused who were dealing in saffron and shawls involving a transaction of Rs 55 lakh.

The victim was not in a position to repay the loan. When the victim protested, the accused threatened to kill her. He also threatened her to go quietly with him to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the police, the victim’s friend was with the accused when he met her. They did not take his friend along who later informed the family about the incident.

After kidnapping the victim, they were trying to recover Rs 55 lakh from her family members.
