Mamta met Speaker over Raj Bhavan’s continued non-cooperation in clearing bills

Mamata’s meeting with the Speaker came after Governor Dhankhar tweeted, “The Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021 is under consideration by the Governor of West Bengal as inputs are awaited @MamataOfficial.”

“The proposal to separate Bally Municipality from HMC was never sent for the consideration of the Governor. SEC may hold HMC elections in 2015 with 66 wards,” reads his tweet.

Referring to West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu’s recent remarks where he said that the state government is contemplating removing the ‘Governor’ and making the ‘Chief Minister’ the ‘Chancellor’ – Dhankhar said, “Only the Chancellor… . I think they will be more than happy to make him (the chief minister) as governor.”

Reacting to the entire controversy, Mamata Banerjee while talking to media personnel in the state assembly has said, “There is a constitutional binding. He is doing his job and I am doing mine.”

Speaker Biman Banerjee said, “I don’t know why he is not giving assent to the Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021. I should have given his assent.”

Recently, Jagdeep Dhankhar claimed on a microblogging site that he has not given any consent regarding the Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021 Bill.

He had also returned the file for reconsideration of a bill which was to exclude the areas of Bally Municipality from Howrah Municipal Corporation.

The Governor has also observed that the State Government has acted in an ‘arbitrary, unfair and ill-advised manner’.
