Mame Khan: I stood out on the Cannes red carpet with my turban and pink pathani suit

A star-studded evening at the India Pavilion at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was brought to life through the music of Mame Khan, performing in her Rajasthani element. The artist is the first folk musician to perform at the Cannes Film Festival, representing the country’s Rajasthani music and culture.

Mame Khan was part of the Indian delegation that went to the 75th Cannes Film Festival. He also became the first folk artist from India to walk the red carpet on the French Riviera.

Talking to News18 about how he ended up at the film festival this year, the singer said, “Diageo India invited me to be a part of the Cannes delegation. It was all about representing the culture and art of India. I am from Rajasthan, I was representing not only my music, but also the folk art and culture of Rajasthan. I was very happy and honored to be the first folk singer from India to walk the Cannes red carpet along with many of India’s celebrities and celebrities whom I have been a fan of. I am very happy to have AR Rahman, Nawazuddin Siddiqui with me on the red carpet.

Although the ‘Chowdhary’ singer has performed in many countries around the world, the Cannes experience was completely different. “23 years ago my first show abroad was in Nice, which is close to Cannes. 23 years later, I walked the red carpet at one of the biggest film festivals in the world. It was an honor for me. Then I came to know that no other folk singer from India had walked the red carpet there before me,” he said.

Mame Khan insisted that she was unique with her traditional look on the red carpet. “While other celebs were dressed by top designers, I wore a Rajasthani outfit consisting of a turban, a jacket and a pink pathani suit. I would say I was unique on the red carpet. I was feeling very proud. The vibe was completely different. Nawazuddin said, I cannot steal your talent, but I will definitely steal your jacket. Everyone gave me a lot of love. The photographers did not know my name, but were saying, ‘Hey turban man, turn to this side.’ This look was absolutely unique for him. ,

A video of him singing Ghoomar and seeing actresses Deepika Padukone, Pooja Hegde, Urvashi Rautela and Tamannaah Bhatia dancing at the India Pavilion also went viral. Describing the moment, Mame Khan said, “It was an amazing moment. All the delegates were narrating their Cannes experience. R Madhavan, Prasoon Joshi, Shekhar Kapur, it was all there. When it was my turn, I had talked about the folk music of Rajasthan, and then all of a sudden, a representative asked me to sing a little. The moment I sang Ghoomar – a force of folk music – it makes you dance. Then Deepika woke up and joined him. The rest of the actresses also joined the dance.
