Mamata pledges to ‘khela hobe’ with focus on 2024 Lok Sabha polls, pitches for united opposition

Taking her “khela hobe” pitch to the national stage, the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee He said on Wednesday that the “khela” will continue till the BJP is removed from the country. “We will start the fight for 2024 from now and we need to start planning now,” Banerjee said at the Martyrs’ Day rally, gearing up for the next Lok Sabha elections.

Banerjee’s slogan for this year’s assembly elections was ‘khela hobe’. “We will celebrate ‘Khel Diwas’ on August 16. We will give football to poor children,” he said in his 45-minute speech.

He also attacked the Center over the Pegasus espionage controversy, saying he did not speak to opposition leaders as he knew his phone was being tapped. “In the name of Pegasus, they are infiltrating our lives.” He appealed to the Supreme Court judges to take suo motu cognizance of the fact that all phones are being tapped, saying that “the need of the hour is to save this democracy”.

Banerjee has promised a grand Brigade Parade Ground rally with opposition leaders in the winter if the Covid situation comes under control.

Interestingly, the Trinamool Congress mouthpiece, “Jaago Bangla”, had a banner headline published in Mamata Banerjee’s byline, which translates to: “Our pledge now: Chalo Delhi”.

According to political analysts, one thing was clear that Banerjee wants the opposition to unite against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and for this she wants to start the ground work to establish a main alternative power. Before 2019 the opposition was seen together but nothing was planned, but this time CM wants to start it much before the 2024 general election.

“We do not have time to waste planning for general elections. I will be in Delhi next week and I want to meet opposition leaders during the ongoing session of Parliament. I propose that you convene a meeting of opposition leaders between 26-28 of this month, we are willing to participate in it,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee will be in New Delhi on July 25 for the first time since her victory in the Bengal assembly elections. According to sources, he is likely to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other opposition leaders.

Banerjee’s landslide victory in Bengal was widely appreciated in the opposition camp and regional leaders are most likely to meet her as elections in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab are to be held next year.
