Kolkata: Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee wrote to the Prime Minister on Thursday Narendra Modi They sought his intervention for early approval of Covaxin by the World Health Organization, without which people taking the India biotech jab may face problems traveling abroad. The CM, in his letter, said that his government has been “receiving both Covishield and Covaxin” from the very beginning.

He said that the private sector in the state has also procured and administered both the vaccines. “A large number of students from across the country travel abroad every year for higher studies and many of them have got themselves vaccinated against Covaxin.

“He later came to know that his vaccination certificate was not valid abroad. These students are now confused about their next course of action and their careers are at stake,” Banerjee wrote to Modi on Thursday. Many countries are only allowing entry to people who have received WHO-accredited vaccines.

“It turns out that Covaxin is still not approved by WHO and it is not possible to travel abroad as many countries are only allowing people who have been fully vaccinated with WHO approved vaccines. “Therefore, I request your intervention to get early approval for Covaxin from WHO so that students do not face any problem. This will also benefit people traveling abroad for job, education, business and other purposes.”

On Wednesday, Banerjee had asked Chief Secretary HK Dwidevi to write a letter to the Union Health Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary in this matter. He had also urged the Center to take steps to ensure that people infected with Covaxin do not face any restrictions during their foreign travel.
