Mamata Banerjee visits flood-hit areas over delay in fixing Ghatal master plan Kolkata News – Times of India

Ghatal: Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Visited the flood affected areas on Tuesday Paschim Medinipur The district further alleged that the laxity in approving the Ghatal master plan by the Center has led to floods in the area every year.
According to the Ghatal master plan announced in 2009, several projects will be taken up in the region to desilt rivers, repair canals and build a dam on the Shilabati river.
Banerjee, who has diverted flood waters in areas under Ghatal municipality, said she is sending a team of ministers, MPs and MLAs to New Delhi to take the Center forward to clear the matter.
“The Center is not paying heed to our requests for the Ghatal master plan. Repeated requests are falling on deaf ears,” he said.
Banerjee, who distributed relief material to some of the affected people, said that Ghatal is a low-lying area, so it cannot be saved without a master plan.
He said, ‘I have surveyed the area. I will prepare a report on this.
…. I think the administration will have to do more work and plan on a large scale,” the chief minister said.
Banerjee also conducted an aerial survey of the area and said she found houses, shops and markets inundated with water.
Officials said the administrative meeting to be held in an auditorium in the area was canceled as it was submerged in flood waters.
Banerjee said, “A team in which (water resource investigation and Development Minister) Manas Bhunia, (Irrigation Minister) Soumen Mohapatra, (two other ministers) Seuli Saha and Shrikant Mahato, (Ghatal’s actor-MP) Dev and (Medinipur MLA) Jun Malia will visit Delhi during the monsoon session. Parliament And meet the Irrigation Minister to put forth your demand (for Ghatal master plan).”
He said these “man-made floods” occur every year after water is released from dams.
At least 23 people have lost their lives and several lakhs have been displaced in floods in seven districts of south Bengal, which Banerjee described as “man-made”.
They have blamed the DVC for the flood situation and claimed that it has released “excessive water” from its dams.
However, the DVC refuted the allegation saying that it releases water after taking the consent of the state government and it was not fair to hold it responsible for the deluge.
Several districts of South Bengal had received heavy monsoon rains last week.
The chief minister said his government would send a proposal to the Center to save the Sundarbans and the seaside town of Digha from the annual floods.
He said that the state government has spent Rs 700 crore for the Kapaleshwar-Keleghai project and it has benefited the people of Paschim Medinipur district.
