Mamata Banerjee, two other TMC MLAs take oath

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath as a member of the state assembly on Thursday. Banerjee, who won the Bhawanipur bypoll for the seat by a record 58,835 votes, took oath in Bengali.

He needed to win the election to retain the chief minister’s chair after he was defeated by security in the March-April assembly elections at the hands of rival BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Soon after, two other newly elected TMC MLAs Zakir Hussain and Amirul Islam also took oath.

Zakir Hussain was declared the winner from Jangipur by a huge margin of 92,480 votes, Amirul Islam won from Samserganj by 26,379 votes. Dhankhar had said on Tuesday that he would administer the oath to Banerjee and others, moving away from the practice of the Governor authorizing the Speaker to practice.
