‘Mamata Banerjee has hidden criminal cases in nomination papers’: BJP complains to Election Commission

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee He has hidden pending criminal cases in his nomination papers for Bhawanipur by-election.

The complaint was lodged by Sajal Ghosh, election agent of BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal from Bhawanipur.

Speaking to News18.com, Sajal Ghosh said, “Yes, today we have submitted a complaint letter to the Returning Officer of 159 Bhabnipur Assembly Constituency and requested him to look into the matter because as per the Supreme Court’s decision no one cannot hide such details while filing nomination.”

“Criminal cases suppressed by Mamata Banerjee are: Case no. – 286/2018 under Sections 20B, 153A and 198 of IPC at Geeta Nagar Police Station, Assam, Case No. – 466/2018 under sections 120B, 153A, 294, 298 and 506 of IPC at Pan Bazar Police Station, Assam, case no. – 288/2018 under Section 121, 153A of IPC at Jagiroad Police Station, Assam, Case No. – 832/2018 under sections 120B and 153A of IPC at North Lakhimpur Sadar Police Station, Assam and case no. – 177/2018) under sections 353, 323 and 338 of IPC at Udarbond police station, Assam.”

The state BJP has demanded that his nomination be canceled. However, during the investigation (which happened today) the Election Commission accepted Mamata’s nomination from Bhabnipur.

A senior TMC leader said, “In all the above cases, his name was not mentioned in the chargesheet by the Assam Police and hence, it is not necessary to mention those allegations. He is experienced in politics and do you think that She will make such a mistake.

This is not the first time BJP has highlighted the same issue (police complaint against him by Assam Police). Ahead of the assembly elections, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had demanded cancellation of Mamata’s nomination from Nandigram, which is why she did not even disclose the CBI case against her.

However, later the CBI clarified that no case is pending against him and the Election Commission also did not pay any attention to the same cases (registered by Assam Police) – which were raised today by Tibrewal’s election agent.

A senior Election Commission official said, “During the investigation we did not find anything wrong in his nomination.”

Speaking to News18.com, TMC MP Saugata Roy said, “BJP has stooped so low that I don’t have words to explain it. Before the election everyone made big claims. He did everything that a civilized person would not do and the people of Bengal showed him the door, trying to mislead the people. They failed miserably in the assembly elections and still they are engaged in so much vile politics.”

He said, “The Election Commission has already accepted her nomination and scrutiny has been done. Our leader Mamata Banerjee is going to secure Bhawanipur seat with a record margin. The BJP knows very well that she is going to lose this seat. And that’s why they are doing such lousy politics.

The Congress has decided not to field any candidate against Mamata Banerjee, while its ally CPI(M) has decided to field Advocate Shreejib Biswas.

The by-polls will be held on 30 September and the counting of votes will take place on 3 October. The election is crucial for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to continue as the CM of the state. As per Article 164 of the Constitution, a minister who is not an MLA within six months has to resign and hence, winning the by-election is crucial for Mamata Banerjee.
