malegaon: Maharashtra: Malegaon registers only 2 deaths in the third wave of Covid-19 | Nashik News – Times of India

NASHIK: Malegaon in Nashik district registered only two deaths in the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, a mere 1.5% of the total fatalities. The third wave started from the first week of January this year.
According to data provided by the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC), the textile town reported 104 Covid deaths during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020 and 175 in the second wave last year. Malegaon was one of the Covid hotspots in the state during the previous two waves.
“Even in terms of people getting infected, Malegaon town has so far registered 866 positive cases in the third wave as against 4,480 in the first wave and over 6,300 in the second,” the civic body’s health department chief, Dr Sapna Thackeraytold TOI.
Currently, the town has around 35 active cases, of which three patients have been admitted to the government-managed Malegaon general hospital. The other patients are in home isolation.
MMC health officials said the Covid scenario in the textile town is “intriguing” since a large section of the population continue to violate Covid-appropriate behavior and the vaccination coverage has been dismal despite the civic body’s best efforts. Of the 5.47 lakh beneficiaries aged above 18 in Malegaon town, the first dose coverage has been around 63% and the second dose just 20%. A bulk of the beneficiaries in the eastern part of the town are showing reluctance to take the vaccine.
“It’s an interesting scenario in our town that despite low vaccine coverage and violation of Covid safety protocols, the infections and fatalities in the third wave have been extremely low,” said Thackeray.
According to her, the findings of the ongoing scientific study by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) will shed light on the scenario in Malegaon.
