Minu Muneer also reacted to Mohanlal-led AMMA’s mass resignation and called it a good move.
Malayalam actress Minu Muneer has demanded justice after accusing actor Jayasurya of sexual assault. In an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18, Muneer urged the authorities to take action against the accused and mentioned that it is time to make workplaces safe for women. “I need justice,” she told us and then added, “Women should feel safe. No one should feel unsafe while working.”
Minu, who also accused CPI(M) MLA and actor Mukesh of assaulting her, further demanded his resignation. She urged the political party not to support him and stated, “Government and the party will never support a person like him. They too have daughters, wives, and sisters. No politics can support a person like Mukesh.”
Minu is hopeful that the government will take strict action against these accused. “Things will change and impact will be seen. They cannot pressurise women. Attitude will change. They should know how to respect women,” she said and then claimed that more women from the film industry will come out in the next few days to share their stories of exploitation and assault.
The actress further reacted to Mohanlal-led AMMA’s mass resignation and called it a good move. She requested Prithviraj Sukumaran to come forward and mentioned that he must lead the AMMA now. Mohanlal, who was the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, announced his resignation with his 17-member executive committee earlier this week.
For the unversed, an FIR has been filed against CPI(M) MLA and actor Mukesh, actor Jayasurya, and Edavela Babu following a complaint by Minu Muneer. The FIR against Jayasurya has reportedly been registered under Section 354 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to intent to outrage a woman’s modesty. The accused have also been charged with sexual and verbal assault.
The cases of sexual assault in the Malayalam film industry are being reported ever since the findings of the Justice Hema Committee Report were made public earlier this month. Several actresses have accused male members of the industry of harassing them. So far, 17 cases have been filed.
