Makar Sankranti 2023: While festivals mean lots of fun and coming together of loved ones, Indian festivals and their timings are often based on scientific reasons related to the seasons. Makar Sankranti is no different. One of the major festivals of India, Sankranti is the time when the Sun God is worshipped. Shweta Krishnamurthy, tarot reader from the All India Institute of Occult Sciences, established by Gurudev Shri Kashyap, tells us, “The sun god is worshiped at Sankranti. The sun plays a major role in our lives, to get energy from our food we need Sun rays fall on us. We get Vitamin D by exposure to sunlight. Plants need sunlight for photosynthesis. All living organisms need sun to survive. That’s why we worship the Sun God.

From the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun’s journey towards the northern hemisphere (Uttarayanam) begins and enters Capricorn (Capricorn) from Sagittarius. The festival also marks the beginning of a six-month auspicious period for Hindus, known as the Uttarayan period. According to Drik Panchang, Makar Sankranti is falling on Sunday, January 15, 2023. This day marks the beginning of the harvest season.

Makar Sankranti 2023: Rituals

According to tarot reader Shweta Krishnamurthy,

Sweet pumpkin food must be prepared on this day.

In the evening ber fruits, sugarcane pieces and coins are put and aarti is performed for children below 5 years of age.

Making sweet rice is very important on this day. This dish is made from rice, pulses, jaggery, grapes, dry fruits, sugar and milk. All these ingredients are cooked in a pot and allowed to boil, which signifies abundance and prosperity for the coming year. This is offered as Naivedya (food offering) to the Sun.

People also eat dry coconut, sesame seeds, peanuts and jaggery, which increase the levels of nutrients in the body. Dry skin will be fine.
