Major minority face from West UP to join SP today as exodus in Congress continues ahead of polling

Despite pleasant promises from Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party is facing exodus ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections due in February. Senior Congress leader Imran Masood along with two other MLAs Naresh Saini (Behat) and Masood Akhtar (Saharanpur) will officially join the Samajwadi Party.

Earlier, from his stronghold Rae Bareli (Sadar), he left the Congress Legislature Party and joined the BJP.

Imran Masood will reach Lucknow with his son-in-law on Wednesday. Saini and Akhtar are also expected to reach Lucknow. Imran Masood had earlier sought time from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav to consider changing the party.

Earlier, he had said that the UP elections are “mainly between the SP and the BJP” and was expected to quit the Congress in September last year, as he openly praised the SP as “the main contender for the 2022 UP polls”. Had it.

He became an independent MLA from Muzaffarabad assembly seat in 2007 by defeating Jagdish Singh Rana of SP. He has also won the election of Saharanpur Municipality President. In 2012, he contested the assembly elections from Nakur but lost.

In 2014, he contested from Saharanpur on Congress ticket and came second with 4.10 lakh votes. He contested the 2017 assembly election from Nakur assembly but lost to BJP candidate Dharam Singh Saini by around 1,300 votes.

Along with the assembly, Imran Masood has also tried his luck in the Lok Sabha elections but could not win.

Earlier, the prominent minority face from the western part of UP had heaped praise on the SP, fueling speculation that he would join the party a few days after meeting the SP chief at a wedding.

Earlier, several senior leaders including Jitin Prasada and Rae Bareli (Sadar) MLA Aditi Singh had joined the BJP. Harendra Malik, a close aide of Priyanka Gandhi, had resigned from the Congress along with his son and state vice-president and former MLA Pankaj Malik.

One thing that was common to most defectors was the allegation of being sidelined and ignored by the party. Besides this, several senior Congress leaders have expressed concern over the behavior of people close to Priyanka Gandhi.
