Akali leader Bikram Majithia

Supreme Court’s relief to veteran Akali leader Bikram Majithia trapped in drugs case is over. He will surrender in the trial court in Mohali today. After this, he will also file a petition for regular bail. Confirming this, Majithia’s lawyer DS Sobti said that Majithia will surrender today. Earlier yesterday, the SIT of Punjab Police in Mohali waited for the whole day but Majithia did not come to surrender.

A case has been registered against Majithia in the Crime Branch of Mohali for colluding with international drug smugglers. The SC had stayed his arrest for contesting elections due to non-availability of bail in this case. However, the Akali Dal says that the Congress government of Punjab registered this case due to political vendetta.

Trial and High Court had rejected the bail
After the case was registered against Bikram Majithia, he had applied for anticipatory bail in the Mohali court, however it was rejected. After this he went to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. After a few days of interim relief there, his petition was rejected. Then he went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had stayed his arrest till February 23 in view of the assembly elections.

Bikram Majithia contesting against Sidhu
Majha’s Akali stalwart Bikram Majithia is contesting this time against Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu from Amritsar East. Earlier he was a candidate from Majitha seat. When Sidhu asked him to contest from Amritsar East, he also entered the fray from there. After this Sidhu challenged that he should leave the Majitha seat and contest from the same seat. Majithia also accepted that condition and contested only from Amritsar East by fielding wife Gainev Kaur from Majithia.
