Mahesh Bhatt recently opened up on his turbulent three-year romance with the iconic Parveen Babi, one of Bollywood’s most glamourous stars in the ’70s and ’80s. Parveen, who tragically passed away in 2005 at just 50, was initially cast in Bhatt’s film Ab Meri Baari. However, after she faced a mental health crisis, Bhatt had to replace her with Rekha. Despite the star power, the project hit a roadblock due to financial issues and never saw the light of day.

In a candid chat with Radio Nasha Official, Mahesh Bhatt opened up about a difficult chapter in his life with the late Parveen Babi. The filmmaker shared that while he was in a relationship with Parveen, he began working on a film titled Ab Meri Baari to spend more time together. He recalled, “I was in a relationship with her and when you are with someone you want to spend time with them. I wanted to make the film Ab Meri Baari. The movie was supposed to feature Dev Anand, Rishi Kapoor, Tina Ambani and also Praveen Babi. During the shooting of the film, she had a mental (health) episode, got sick and the film was stopped. Then we took Rekha ji and reshot it but because of lack of finance, it couldn’t be completed.”

Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi’s romance reportedly began in 1977 after her split from Kabir Bedi. Devastated by the breakup, Parveen found solace in Bhatt, and the two quickly fell in love. Bhatt even left his wife, Lorraine Bright (known as Kiran Bhatt), and their daughter Pooja Bhatt, to be with the glamourous actress. However, their passionate relationship was soon tested and ultimately unraveled due to Parveen’s struggles with mental health.

Parveen Babi, a Bollywood icon of the 1970s and 1980s, battled paranoid schizophrenia, which led to intense delusions and paranoia. She believed she was being targeted by powerful figures, including politicians and intelligence agencies, causing her to withdraw from public life. Despite her stardom, Babi spent her final years in isolation, struggling with her mental health.
