Maharashtra’s Omicron recorded the highest increase of 23 in a single day. Thane News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The state on Thursday recorded its highest single-day increase in omicron cases, with genetic sequencing of samples from 23 people – including five from Mumbai – showing the new highly transmissible variant. The previous single-day high tally was 11 on 21 December.
Of the 23 omicron-positive COVID cases, 16 had international travel history and seven were their high-risk contacts. State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate said on Thursday that 17 out of 23 patients were asymptomatic, while six had mild illness. He said 18 were fully vaccinated.
Apart from five in Mumbai, 13 new Omicron cases were reported in Pune, two from Osmanabad, while Thane, Nagpur and Mira-Bhayandar reported one case each.
The state’s Omron tally has risen to 88 so far. Of these, 35 were admitted to hospitals in Mumbai and 42 were discharged after the RT PCR report came negative.
Of the five new omicron cases in the city, only two are Mumbai residents – a 27-year-old woman who had returned from London and a 21-year-old student returning from Milan via Abu Dhabi. “Both these patients were admitted to Bombay Hospital after testing positive for Covid at the Mumbai airport. He has no symptoms and is not on any medication,” said Dr Gautam Bhansali, the doctor who treated him.
Of the other three women, one was from Rajasthan and the other from Uttar Pradesh. The 15-year-old, a Pune resident who traveled from London, has been kept under observation at a hospital in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the city of Thane reported its first Omicron patient. A 40-year-old male, who had come from Ghana to Thane on December 14, developed fever the next day and tested positive, a TMC official said. While genetic sequencing showed he had Omicron, his wife tested negative for the variant. His condition is stable, the civic official said.
