Women and Child Development Minister Yashomati Thakur told the Legislative Council on Monday that the Maharashtra government would constitute a committee to probe the alleged misuse of state funds in the implementation of the “Prajwala” scheme launched by the erstwhile BJP-led government.

Prajwala scheme was launched in 2019 by the then government with an aim to create awareness about legal matters, social and financial knowledge among the members of women self help groups (SHGs). This scheme was implemented by Maharashtra Commission for Women.

Responding to the calling attention raised by Shiv Sena MLA Manisha Kayande, Thakur said, the Maharashtra government will constitute an inquiry committee to probe the alleged misuse and mis-utilisation of state funds under the Prajwala scheme. The then Chairperson of the State Commission for Women will also be asked to appear before the Commission of Inquiry. BJP leader Vijaya Rahatkar was the chairperson of the State Commission for Women during 2014-19.

Kayande told the council that the bills presented by the officials of the State Commission for Women are handwritten and not final. The bills presented were not in proper format which is required as per the guidelines. He said that the scheme was to be implemented in all 288 assembly constituencies, but it was implemented in select 98 assembly constituencies. Kayande said that the assembly constituencies were selected in such a way that only the BJP would benefit from this scheme. “It is totally unethical. There are also some CAG reports in the past which have taken some strictness on the implementation of this scheme,” he said.
