Maharashtra: SPCA’s handling of Bhandewadi animal shelter expected to improve Nagpur News – Times of India

Nagpur: Animal shelter will be run for the first time in Bhandewadi Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The move comes after both government and private agencies failed to improve the pathetic condition of the shelter for several years.
The decision was taken after the issue was raised during the recent meeting of various SPCAs of different cities.
“As of now, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will call for tenders and give the responsibility of running the shelter to NGOs or women self-help groups. In the recent meeting, we appealed to senior officials to hand it over to the SPCA,” said Karishma Galani, SPCA member and senior animal welfare activist.
Though the process of authorizing the SPCA to run the civic body’s shelter was challenging, it has been done successfully. TOI learned that three doctors were also deputed at the shelter on Friday.
A group of citizens from different regions have also come together to bear the cost of the shelter, as long as the money is not given to the society. “People are contributing in various forms – some providing rice, some cost of treatment, or wages of workers. Till now, the shelter was in a pathetic condition with neither sanitation nor proper medical treatment and care,” said Galani.
For the past few years, TOI has been reporting about the poor condition of the shelter. There have been many complaints and protests regarding this.
Now, with the SPCA taking over, animal lovers are expecting the situation to improve. “We are planning to create proper infrastructure at the shelter. A surgeon will also be appointed to perform the operation,” said Galani. If things go well, a gaushala can also be built in Bhandewadi.
In recent times, human-animal conflict is also taking place due to the increasing population of stray dogs. There have been many cases of not only dog bites but also brutal cruelty to animals.
On this, the SPCA is planning to start the Animal Birth Control operation soon. “It has become important to control the dog population in the city. These problems are arising because sterilization of stray animals was stopped during the pandemic. The SPCA will soon ensure that the operations start soon,” said Galani.
Other agendas of the committee include ensuring license for each pet shop, controlling illegal breeding, ensuring scientific implementation of sterilization, prevention. animal cruelty matters, and facilities for the welfare of animals.
