Maharashtra reports 18,466 fresh Covid cases, 58% from Mumbai alone

Maharashtra reported 18,466 fresh COVID cases today, of which 58.9% were reported from Mumbai alone. The city reported 10,860 fresh Covid-19 cases, amid the risk of a massive new omicron variant in the state. Additionally, 75 new omicron cases were reported in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours.

In Mumbai, the fresh cases reported today are 34% more than the cases reported yesterday (Monday). Of the fresh cases, 9,665 were asymptomatic. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the recovery rate in Mumbai is 92%. In the last 24 hours, 2 people succumbed to the infection.

Earlier today, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Tuesday said that if the daily COVID-19 cases here cross the 20,000-mark, the city will be under lockdown as per the norms of the central government. Speaking to reporters at his office at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters, Pednekar suggested that citizens wear triple-layer masks while traveling in public buses and local trains.

He also appealed to them to get vaccinated at the earliest and follow all the COVID-19-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said that in Pune, another important city, 1,104 COVID19 cases have been reported today, taking the positivity rate to 18%. The physical class standard from 1 to 8 in Pune district including the limits of Municipal Corporation Pune city and Pimpri chinchwad has been closed till 30 January. School classes will continue in online mode.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray can address citizens in a couple of days.

Notably, the cruise ship, where 66 out of over 2,000 people on board tested positive for coronavirus, was flown back to Mumbai from Goa late Monday night along with all passengers.
