Maharashtra rain: Pune: IMD forecasts more rain, thundershower activity till Saturday. Pune News – Times of India

Pune: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted rain in the city till Saturday and cautioned citizens to avoid staying outside during strong thunderstorms and lightning activity.
Heavy rain lashed the city on Monday night. But the amount of rain varies from region to region. For example, Lohegaon recorded the highest 37 mm in 24 hours till 8:30 am on Tuesday, followed by Lavale (31.5 mm) and Shivajinagar (29.8 mm). Heavy rain occurred in different areas in a period of half an hour to 45 minutes.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather forecasting department of IMD-Pune, said, “These are convective rains associated with local instability. Moisture is reaching different parts of the state from the south Maharashtra. During the daytime, temperatures are higher, which can lead to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. These clouds are thunderclouds that cause convective rain. Such rains usually last for half an hour to an hour.”
Kashyapi said that Pune city is also expected to be partly cloudy, generally cloudy in the afternoon and evening, with light to moderate rain and lightning with thundershowers for the next few days.
Monsoon is presently weak over Maharashtra and there is no robust system in place to influence the rains in the state. “However, substantial moisture is coming into the state through easterly winds which are pulling moisture from a system over the Bay of Bengal. This system formed over southwest Bay of Bengal is diverting the winds especially towards southern part of Maharashtra. Thus the easterly winds are bringing moisture from the Bay of Bengal to South Maharashtra. Another system, an upper air cyclonic circulation over east central Arabian Sea, is pumping moisture into our state,” he said.
IMD is still expecting widespread rain in some parts of the state from October 5-9. Kashyap said, “There is also a warning of heavy rain for Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra till October 9. Ghat areas of Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur and Satara may also receive thunderstorms and heavy rains till October 9. it might rain.”
