Nagpur: Gangster turned leader Arun GawliPresently serving life term in Nagpur Central Jail in a murder case, is pursuing a degree course in Arts. open University In Maharashtraan official said on Tuesday.
Gawli registers for Bachelor of Arts (BA) course from Nashik Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University Jail superintendent Anoop Kumre said (YCMOU) in 2019 after topping an exam conducted by an NGO in 2017 on ‘Gandhian thought’.
However, in the BA course, Gawli failed in one subject each in the first and second year.
The official said that he managed to pursue the final year of the course under the ATKT (Conditions of Permission) provision.
ATKT is a process in the education system that allows students of undergraduate and graduate courses to study in the next class if they fail certain subjects.
Kumre said prisoners were allowed to register for various courses from YCMOU and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
Gawli is serving a life sentence for the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamalakar Jamsandekar and is behind bars since 2008.
Another official said that a total of 229 convicts in Nagpur Central Jail, including Gawli, are currently pursuing various courses from BA to Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Of them, 157 prisoners, including 14 women, were pursuing BA from YCMOU, while 72 prisoners, including two women, had enrolled in IGNOU.
One of the murder convicts in the jail is also pursuing MBA, the official said.
He said that prisoners get books by post from universities.
The official said the examination for the prisoners is conducted at Nagpur Central Jail, which is notified as the examination center by the two universities.
