MUMBAI: The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) theory exams will be conducted in offline mode in 35 days in March-April next year.
The pattern of the question paper will remain the same as the previous years. The teachers had requested the state to change the evaluation pattern and introduce more Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the board exams were canceled and the students were assessed internally.
State School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad on Thursday announced the dates for HSC and SSC written and oral exams. HSC Exam Theory Paper will be held from 4th March to 7th April. Practical, oral and internal assessments will be conducted from February 14 to March 3.
SSC theory papers will be held from March 15 to April 18. Practical, oral and internal assessment will be conducted by the schools from February 25 to March 14. Gaikwad said that the exam will be based on 25% less syllabus.
The exam will be based on theory of 80 marks and internal assessment of 20 marks, projects, oral and practical. Out of 80 marks theory paper, about 10 marks will be for objective type questions. Teachers were expecting more MCQs as physical schools reopened only in October and students suffered learning loss during online classes.
The Central Board of Secondary Education and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations both started two board exams in this academic year. The first board exam which consisted of 50% less syllabus was MCQ based. The second slate for next March-April is likely to be subjective and will cover the remaining 50% of the syllabus.
“In language papers, 30 marks are for comprehension. There is no practice for students to write long answers,” said a class 10 teacher. The schools said that though meetings were held to discuss the question pattern, none of the suggestions were incorporated.
However, schools and junior colleges welcomed the state’s decision to announce the dates. “The students were under the impression that they would get the results on the basis of internal assessment. Now they will be serious about the exam. We can also appear in the preliminary examination,” said the principal of Wadala College.
The extension of the exam dates by two weeks has given enough time to the schools and colleges to prepare the students. “HSC exams usually end in the first week of March and that is when SSC begins. This year, both the exams will be delayed by two weeks and this will give us time to plan,” said a principal of the school. Gaikwad said he expected the HSC results to be declared by mid-June and SSC by the second week of July. He said that the detailed time table of the examinations would be released soon.
