Maharashtra govt calls all-party meeting over loudspeaker row

The Maharashtra government has called an all-party meeting on the issue of loudspeakers at religious places and to ensure that there are no law-and-order issues. The meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday.

The meeting was called by the state home minister Dilip Walse Patil.

Maharashtra MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana on Friday said that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa in front of CM Udhav Thackeray’s residence. Following their statement, Shiv Sena workers staged a protest and filed an FIR under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. Section 153 A is imposed against those found indulging in “wanton vilification or attacks upon the religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc of any particular group or class or upon the founders and prophets of a religion.”

The couple was arrested by Mumbai police and sent to judicial custody till May 6.
