The Maharashtra government announced on Friday that it would provide an assistance of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin or immediate relatives of those who lost their lives due to COVID-19, news agency ANI reported on Friday evening.

The Health Department said on Friday evening that 852 new cases of corona virus have been reported in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours and 34 people have died, while the number of active cases has come down to 9,000.

The caseload in the state rose to 66,32,723 and the death toll rose to 1,40,891. There are currently 8,106 active cases in the state. The department said the caseload has been revised down and the cumulative total has come down by 1,234 after removing the duplications.

The state has reported less than 10,000 active cases in the last six days. The health department said the recovery rate is 97.7 percent while the death rate is 2.12 percent.

At present 78,122 people are in home quarantine and 1,052 are in institutional quarantine. The number of coronavirus tests conducted so far rose to 6,51,55,293 with 1,07,802 samples tested since Thursday evening.

The release said 665 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of cured patients to 64,80,061. Fourteen districts and three municipal bodies did not report any new infections on Friday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir authorities had approved procedural guidelines for an ex-gratia of Rs 5000 each to COVID-19 victims. In October, the Uttar Pradesh government had also announced a payment of Rs 50,000 as financial assistance to the family members of those who died after contracting COVID-19 in the state.

In September, the Indian government submitted a detailed affidavit in the Supreme Court that it would give Rs 50,000 as ex-gratia to the families of people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through the SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund).
