Maharashtra cabinet upset over Governor’s ‘interference in governance’ Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: In an unprecedented development in the political history of the country, MaharashtraThe Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government on Tuesday expressed strong “displeasure” over Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s efforts to “create two Shakti Kendras” and “interfere in the state administration”.
The cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was “displeased” with the actions of the 79-year-old governor. Uddhav Thackeray Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and ministers from all three allies- Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress-are present.
Minister of Minority Affairs and NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik Informed media persons that the cabinet has directed Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte to personally visit the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday itself and apprise the Governor’s aides about the “sharp sentiments” of the MVA government on the issue.
He said that Kunte has been asked to meet the secretaries of Koshyari and inform them about the powers and duties of the Governor as per the Constitution.
The rapid political development came even as NCP President Sharad Pawar shared moments of friendship with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
“The governor seems to have forgotten that he is no longer the chief minister of Uttarakhand, but the governor of Maharashtra,” Malik said without saying anything.
The governor’s plan for a 3-day visit to Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani districts later this week had sparked fresh war between the MVA government and the Raj Bhavan.
Among his engagements is the inauguration of two hostels – one for boys and girls – funded and built by the state government, which have been completed but have not yet been handed over to the local university.
“It is the prerogative of the State Government to inaugurate it and hand over the University. Therefore, it was not appropriate on the part of the Governor to conduct the program directly without asking the Minorities Department or the State Administration. This is a violation. On the rights of the Government as per the Constitution, Malik said.
In addition, the governor plans to hold review meetings with district collectors of Nanded and district collectors of Hingoli on August 6 and Parbhani on August 7, which has angered the MVA government.
“We have no objection to any program of the Governor in universities, as he is the Vice-Chancellor of all state universities… but why other meetings. Is the governor trying to create ‘two Shakti Kendras’ in the state?” Malik asked.
The minister said that Koshyari often says that when he was the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand (2001-2002), he did “how he climbed the hills, this or that”, but he should realize that he is no longer in this position, Rather the governor. of Maharashtra.
He hoped that after the Chief Secretary’s briefing, the Raj Bhavan would suitably revise the programs of the Governor, especially relating to the inauguration of hostels and a series of review meetings with the three District Collectors.
This is not the first time that the governor has violated the powers of the state government and had earlier started taking Covid-19 review meetings, which eventually ended after the MVA government complained to the Centre, Malik said.
He said that the governor has not yet decided on the list of nominations of 12 MLCs from the governor’s quota for the Legislative Council, although the state cabinet has already approved it in November 2020, along with the list of MPSC members.
“We are very hopeful that the governor will take necessary steps in these pending cases very soon,” Malik said.
