Maharana Pratap Jayanti: Interesting facts about the Rajput ruler

MAHARANA PRATAP JAYANTI: Maharana Pratap, the 13th king of Mewar, was one of the few rules that stood up against the Mughal Empire. Maharana Pratap was born in a year when his father ascended the throne of the royal family of Mewar. According to the English calendar, Maharana Pratap was born on May 9, 1540. Therefore, his birth anniversary is celebrated twice by his follower- once on 9 June and the other time, as per the Hindu calendar.

According to Vikram Samvat Muhurta, the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap will be celebrated on 2nd June in 2022. As we remember the great ruler on his birth anniversary, here are some interesting facts about him:

date of birth

The earliest reference to the date of birth of Maharana Pratap is found in Abul Fazal’s book Akbarnama, which mentions his date of birth according to the Hijri calendar. The first reference to Vikram Samvat comes from the 1710 book of poet Charan, Rawal Rana Baat.

ascension to the throne

After the death of his father Udai Singh II, at the age of 32, Maharana Pratap took over the throne of the royal family of Mewar.

Battle of Haldighati

Maharana Pratap fought many battles against the Mughals, but the most difficult of them was the Battle of Haldighati against Akbar’s army. The war began on June 18, 1576. Akbar sent many proposals to Maharana Pratap to accept Mughal hegemony but he refused to bow down. While Akbar eventually managed to win the war, he could not kill or capture Maharana Pratap or his family.

Chittor recaptured

Maharana Pratap reclaimed many of his territories from the Mughals, but could not gain control of the Mewar kingdom, the heart of Chittor. Amar Singh I, the son of Maharana Pratap, eventually accepted Mughal supremacy and was allowed to enter Chittor.

Maharana Pratap’s Loyal Horse Chetak

Maharana Pratap shares a special bond with his faithful horse Chetak. During the Battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap aboard a Chetak was attacked by Man Singh I, the leader of the Mughal army of Amer riding on an elephant. During the encounter, the tusks of the elephant came out through Chetak’s hind leg. However, despite the fatal injury, Chetak saved his life by moving the injured Maharana Pratap away from the enemies.
