Savitri started her journey in the film industry with the film Sansaram directed by LV Prasad. She didn’t get much screen time in the film, but Sansaram was a box office hit – which opened up many acting opportunities for her. She made one of the most loved pairings with veteran superstar Sivaji Ganesan in films such as Navaratri, Pasamalar, Karnan and Thiruvilayadal. These films are still enshrined in the hearts of cinematographers. She also got cinematic fame from the Telugu film Maya Bazaar. The actress left no stone unturned to get into her characters.
Another most admirable feature of Savitri’s personality was not to confine herself to the regressive and patriarchal norms of the society. She did not leave the film industry even after her marriage to Gemini Ganesan. She tied the knot at the age of 18 but continued to act.
Despite her determination and desire towards her career, she faced difficulties in her personal life. There were reports that their marriage turned sour after Gemini’s films flopped at the box office. On the other hand, at that time she was at the peak of her career. Unable to handle these harrowing events, she turned to alcohol and lapsed into a coma for 19 months. He died on 26 December 1981 at the age of 44.
