The Maharashtra government on Monday assured strict action against Hindu religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj for allegedly using derogatory words against Mahatma Gandhi. Maharashtra’s Minority Affairs Minister raised the issue in the state assembly and demanded that the religious leader be booked for sedition and arrested.
During a ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur on Sunday evening, Kalicharan Maharaj had allegedly used a derogatory word against the Father of the Nation and praised his killer Natharam Godse. Later, following a complaint by a Congress leader, sections 505(2) (statements provoking or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 294 (obscene acts) of the Indian Penal Code were filed against the religious leader in Raipur. The issue of his remarks against Mahatma Gandhi came up in the Maharashtra Assembly on Monday. NCP member Nawab Malik said in the house that Kalicharan Maharaj is a resident of Akola in Maharashtra. Malik said that the religious leader should be booked for sedition and arrested.
BJP member Sudhir Mungantiwar wondered what the state’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA-Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) government was doing and why it was not taking action against Kalicharan Maharaj. Congress members Nana Patole and Vijay Wadettiwar supported Malik’s demand.
He urged the Speaker to direct the State Government. On this, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that Malik and Wadettiwar are the representatives of the government. “It is the job of the government to take action. The MVA government will seek a report about (Kalicharan Maharaj’s) comments and take strict action.”
During the program in Raipur, Kalicharan Maharaj had said, “The goal of Islam is to capture the nation through politics. Before our eyes they occupied in 1947 (referring to the partition) … They had previously occupied Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. He captured Bangladesh and Pakistan through politics…I salute Nathuram Godse for killing Gandhi.”
