MVA-backed Sudhakar Adabale defeated BJP-backed Independent and sitting MLC Nagorao Gunar from Nagpur seat

In a jolt to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)-backed candidate on Thursday won the Maharashtra Legislative Council’s Nagpur division teacher seat.

Nagpur, where the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters is located, is also the home district of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

MVA-backed Sudhakar Adabale defeated BJP-backed Independent and sitting MLC Nagorao Gunnar from the seat.

However, BJP candidate Dnyaneshwar Mhatre from the Konkan Division teachers’ constituency won the election. Mhatre, the BJP candidate supported by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Balasahebchi Shiv Sena, won the Konkan Teachers’ constituency by defeating MVA-backed candidate Balram Patil.

Voting for the biennial election for five seats in the upper house of the legislature took place on 30 January. Counting was underway for three other seats – Aurangabad division teacher’s constituency and Amravati and Nashik division’s graduate section. The six-year term of five council members – three from teachers’ and two from graduates’ constituencies – ends on February 7.

Returning Officer and Divisional Commissioner Mahendra Kalyankar, who announced the results for the Konkan Teachers’ constituency, said Mhatre got 20,683 votes, while Patil got 10,997 votes. The Konkan Teachers’ constituency includes the districts of Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The highest polling of 91.02 per cent was recorded in this segment.
