A day after the body of a 5-month-old baby was found in a drum filled with water at Kalwa in Thane district, police on Sunday arrested the infant’s mother and charged her with murder and destruction of evidence, an official said. The relatives of Shrikant Shankar Chavan told the police that he was abducted from his Mahatma Phule Nagar house on Friday afternoon, following which Kalwa police formed several teams to solve the case.

However, on Saturday morning, the child’s body was found in a plastic drum filled with water near his house. “We checked the CCTV footage of the area and questioned people including the child’s family members. We got information that the child was often ill and it was his mother Shantabai Chavan who used to give him medicines. However, on Friday she mistakenly gave him one. Gave high doses, which led to the death of the child,” said assistant commissioner of police Venkat Andale.

The ACP said, “He made up a story about the kidnapping of the child on Friday afternoon and then put it inside a drum filled with water on Saturday morning. He has confessed to his crime. Kalwa police is investigating further.”
