Maha: Bandh in Jalna District Over Governor’s Remarks on Shivaji Maharaj

Shops and business establishments remained closed in Maharashtra’s Jalna district on Wednesday in response to the shutdown called by the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) and opposition parties to protest against Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s controversial remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The governor had recently courted controversy by calling the 17th century Maratha warrior king a symbol of the “olden days”.

Local Congress MLA Kailash Gorantyal and MKM coordinator Sanjay Lakhe Patil appealed to traders to close their shops in response to the bandh.

In the morning, the protesters took out a rally which passed through different areas of Jalna town.

Former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Rajesh Tope criticized Koshyari for his remarks.

Tope said that people of a certain ideology are spreading misinformation about great personalities.

He warned that Maharashtra will not tolerate the insult of great men.

In central Maharashtra, the day-long bandh received a good response in rural and urban parts of the district.
